Overview

A journey into the ancient Kingdom of Lo, the Upper Mustang Trek offers stunning desert landscapes, Tibetan-influenced culture, and centuries-old monasteries. Starting from Jomsom to Lo Manthang, it’s a rare trek into Nepal’s hidden Himalayan world.

Itinerary

    • Accommodation:

       Overnight in Kathmandu.

    • Altitude:

       1,350M

    • Arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer to your hotel.
      Evening briefing and trek preparation.

    • Accommodation:

      Overnight in Kathmandu.

    • Visit major UNESCO sites such as Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Pashupatinath, and Boudhanath Stupa.
      Free afternoon for final preparations and permit arrangements.

    • Accommodation:

      Overnight in Pokhara.

    • Travel to Pokhara, the gateway to the Annapurna region. Enjoy a relaxing evening by Phewa Lake.
       

    • Accommodation:

      Overnight at lodge.

    • A scenic flight over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges to Jomsom. Begin the trek along the Kali Gandaki River to the medieval village of Kagbeni — the official entry point to Upper Mustang.
       

    • Accommodation:

       3,050M

    • The trail ascends along the Kali Gandaki gorge with views of Nilgiri and Tukuche peaks. Cross several ridges and small villages before reaching Chele.
       

    • Accommodation:

    • Climb through narrow canyons and cross the Taklam La (3,624 m) and Dajori La (3,735 m) passes. Pass Samar village and descend into Syangboche.
       

    • Accommodation:

    • Trek across several small passes and enjoy spectacular views of the Mustang cliffs. Descend to the village of Ghami, one of the largest in the region.
       

    • Accommodation:

    • Altitude:

       3,560M

    • Cross the Ghami Khola and follow the trail along ancient mani walls. Reach Tsarang, home to a massive red monastery and an old palace.
       

    • Accommodation:

      Overnight at lodge or guesthouse.

    • Altitude:

       3,840M

    • Climb gradually to the Marang La Pass (4,230 m) and descend into the walled city of Lo-Manthang, the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Mustang.
       

    • Accommodation:

      Overnight at lodge.

    • Explore the Royal Palace, Tingkhar Village, and ancient monasteries like Jampa Lhakhang, Thubchen Gompa, and Chode Gompa.
      Optional short hike to Namgyal Gompa or Thinkar.

    • Accommodation:

      Overnight at lodge.

    • Visit Chhoser village, famous for its ancient sky caves and Niphu and Jhong cave monasteries, carved high into the cliffs. Return to Lo-Manthang.
       

    • Accommodation:

      Overnight at lodge.

    • Altitude:

       3,810M 

    • Retrace the trail via Gyakar, known for the Ghar Gompa, one of the oldest monasteries linked to Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava). Continue to Drakmar.
       

    • Accommodation:

      Overnight at lodge.

    • Altitude:

       3,570M

    • Descend through windy, dry terrain with wide views of the Mustang Valley.
       

    • Accommodation:

      Overnight at lodge.

    • Altitude:

       3,050M

    • Walk along dusty trails with panoramic mountain views. Pass small villages and reach Chhuksang.
       

    • Accommodation:

      Overnight at lodge.

    • Altitude:

       2,720M

    • Last day of trekking! Descend through Kagbeni and continue along the Kali Gandaki River back to Jomsom.
       

    • Accommodation:

      Overnight in Kathmandu.

    • Morning flight to Pokhara (weather permitting).
      Optional flight or drive back to Kathmandu.

    • Transfer to the airport for your onward flight or extension trip.

    Guide and Porter

    • Experienced, government-licensed English-speaking trekking guide.

    • Porter service (1 porter for every 2 trekkers; max. 20 kg total).

    • Guide and porter’s salary, insurance, meals, accommodation, and transportation.

    Sightseeing

    • Guided sightseeing in Kathmandu and Pokhara as per itinerary, including entrance fees.

    Other Services

    • First aid kit carried by the trekking guide.

    • Certificate of trek completion upon request.

    • Nepal entry visa (available on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport).
